CHANDLER Chandler is a strawberry developed in California and does very well in Arkansas and surrounding states. Chandler is a heavy producer with large berries. The best characteristic of Chandler is its long production season. It ripens a few days before the Cardinal and lasts about 10 days longer. Chandler is our #1 choice.
ALLSTAR Allstar is a vigorous and productive variety. It has large firm berries that are excellent for freezing. The plants have a superior resistance to most strawberry diseases: Red stele, verticillium wilt, leaf scorch and powdery mildew. Allstar bears in midseason.
BLAKEMORE Blakemore produces firm, bright red fruit. The berries are tart which makes them an excellent berry for jams and jellies. Blakemore bears heavy, makes many new runner plants, and has a tendency not to rot during hot and humid weather. This is one of our older varieties that is still very popular.
CARDINAL Cardinal is a release of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and was developed by J. N. Moore, H. L. Bowden, and W. A. Sistrunk. Cardinal is a strawberry that is firm, glossy red, and very large in size. It is a very good berry for eating fresh and freezing. Because of its high yielding and shipping qualities, it is an excellent berry for pick-your-own operations. Cardinal is a mid-season variety. The plants are productive, vigorous, and resistant to leaf spot, leaf scorch, and powdery mildew. It is recommended for the South-Central states surrounding Arkansas and East to North Carolina and Maryland.
EARLIGLOW Earliglow is an early season bearer. The fruit is firm and medium size. Recommended for freezing, desserts, and preserves. It is disease resistant to red stele and moderately to leaf scorch and leaf spot. Our richest flavored strawberry.
GUARDIAN Guardian produces very large, firm, and light colored berries. It is a mid-season variety. The plants have a resistance to most strawberry diseases: Red stele, verticillium wilt, leaf scorch, and powdery mildew. Guardian is recommended for the areas from Maryland northward to Massachusetts and across the Midwest to Missouri.
SPARKLE The sparkle produces fruit that is dark glossy red in color and is medium in size. It is a late season bearer and because of its winter hardiness is recommended for Northern states.
SURECROP Surecrop is an early mid-season variety. It is medium to large in size and has a bright red color. It is a good berry for freezing. Surecrop has a resistance to red stele and verticillium wilt, leaf spot, and leaf scorch. It will grow in poorer soils where some varieties fail.
TENNESSEE BEAUTY This berry is beautiful, bright red and will remain ripe on the plant for some time without loss of quality. Grows well in the Southern and Midwestern states as well as New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Excellent all-around strawberry.
HONEOYE The June bearer was developed by the New York Experiment Station. The fruit has a bright, glossy red color. Plants are extremely winter hardy. Honeoye ripens early midseason.
OZARK BEAUTY Juicy red berries are produced throughout the summer until frost. Berries are sweet, bright red, and firm. Delicious for fresh eating, freezing, and preserving. Ozark Beauty is probably the best and heaviest bearing everbearer. Year after year, our most popular everbearing.
OGALLALA Large delicious berries that are red all the way through. Sweet wild strawberry flavor. It is a good northern berry. Very winter hardy. Great yielder. Great for Northern states.
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS It is best to set plants in early spring. Select well drained land that is as free of grass and weed seed as possible. Suggested row width is 36 to 48 inches. Set the plants in the row 12-24 inches apart. Keep clean of grass and weeds. Plants should be set properly and watered.
FACTS ABOUT STRAWBERRIES A small space yields you so much when you plant Americas all-time favorite berry– the strawberry! They are so easy to grow, even beginners should expect success.
There are two basic types of strawberries: June bearers and everbearers. For a steady supply of fresh berries from spring till frost choose an everbearer. If you want to freeze, make jam or can, then the June bearer will yield you a large convenient crop. Better still, plant some of each type. Allow about 25 plants per family member for lots of delicious eating.
