Blueberries

BLUECROP

Bluecrop is a highbush type variety.  Firm, bright blue, large delicious berries that grow in loose, easy to pick clusters.  Very hardy and drought resistant.  Fruit is great either fresh or processed.  Mid-season.

BLUEJAY

Bluejay is a highbush type variety.  Fruit grows in open, loose clusters and keeps on the vine without loss.  The fruit has a pleasant mild taste and is only slightly tart.  Quality of berry is firm and light blue in color.  Early to mid-season.

BLUERAY

An early midseason highbush variety that produces large yields of light blue colored berries.  Plants grow vigorously and are hardy and free from disease.  Blueray is the leading variety planted for U-pick markets.

COLLINS

Collins is a highbush type cultivar.  Fruit size is medium, and quality is excellent.  The berries are light blue and the flavor has a sweet to mild taste.  Collins is one of the leading early varieties that should be great for fresh market and U-pick operations.

DUKE

Medium to large light blue berries with a mildly sweet flavor.  This attractive berry is quite firm and retains its fresh quality longer than most varieties.  Duke blooms late but ripened early, which protects the blossoms from spring frosts.  It is one of the heaviest, most consistent producers, often yielding over 20 pounds per bush when mature.  Duke bushes are upright growers.

WOODARD

Woodard is a rabbiteye type variety.  Fruit is medium, large and firm.  Slightly tart in flavor.  Good for cooking and preserving.  Late season.

TIFBLUE

A rabbiteye variety.  Berry quality is good and firm.  Fruit size is large.  This variety is most winter hardy of the rabbiteye varieties.  Excellent variety for the southern states.  Mid-season.

DELITE

This rabbiteye variety is a mid to late season bearer.  Fruit size is medium to large and berry quality is good.  Mid-season.

CLIMAX

Because of the early ripening of this rabbiteye variety, Climax will be of value to U-pick and commercial fresh markets.  Berry quality is very good and fruit size is large.  Climax ripens early in the season.

OZARK BLUE BLUEBERRY

Ozark Blue is the first release from the University of Arkansas blueberry program.  It was developed for the upper southern U.S. Growth is quite vigorous and has upright bushes.  Ozark Blue fruit is very high quality, firm and large.  We highly recommend this one for your garden and commercial use.  Mid to late season.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS

Blueberries require a soil that is acid, well drained, with medium to low fertility.  In addition, blueberries require irrigation, or they will die of summer drought.  Surface and internal soil drainage is essential since standing water may kill the plants.  It is good insurance to mound up the planting row from several inches to a foot high and several feet wide depending on the potential for poor drainage.  Plant no deeper than the pot level or nursery level.  The desired pH of soils artificially acidified for cultivated blueberries appears to be in the 5.0-5.2 pH range.  Plant the blueberries in the fall or in the spring.  Cultivate the area before planting.  Blueberries should be planted at least four feet apart, use a shovel or open a furrow with a turning plow for a convenient size hole.  Place one-half gallon of peat moss in the bottom of the furrow.  Cover the roots with a mixture of the remaining one-half gallon of peat moss and soil.
